Woman killed, 2 children hurt in Badda fire
A woman died and her two children were critically injured as a fire broke out at a house in the capital's Badda early yesterday.
The deceased is Jesmin, 38, wife of an expat, while the injured are Amanullah, 11, and Sanjida, 8, said Kazi Wazed Ali, officer-in-charge of Badda Police Station.
The fire might have originated from an electric short circuit at a furniture shop on the ground floor of the two-storey tin-shed building at Boithakhali around 4:00am, suspected Farhad Hossain, duty officer of Fire Service and Civil Defence Headquarters.
Four firefighting units brought the fire under control after a one-hour effort.
The three were later rescued by the locals. On information, police took them to the burn unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Jesmin died there around 7:30am, said the OC. She suffered from 70 percent burn injuries.
The children are suffering from 30 percent burn injuries, said Dr Partha Shankar Paul, a resident surgeon at the burn unit. They are not out of danger yet, he added.
Rafiqul Islam, brother of Jesmin, said her husband, Abbas Uddin, who lives in Qatar, was on his way home after hearing the news.
He also requested the police to investigate whether the fire was an accident or not.
