Woman caught red-handed while stealing child

Police detained a 40-year old woman red-handed while she was stealing a two-year old girl from a ward at Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) yesterday at noon.

The detainee was identified as Anwara Begum Baby, wife of Abul Hasem, from Sitakunda upazila in Chittagong. She was handed over to Panchlaish Police Station for legal action.

Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Alauddin Talukdar of CMCH said Anwara took two-year old Nazifa, daughter of Md Shahjahan, on her lap while the toddler was walking around in ward No.32.

Shahjahan, an employee of Chittagong office of the Directorate of Food, went to the ward with his daughter to see a patient.

At one point Shahjahan looked for his child and asked an on-duty Ansar men, said the ASI, adding that another Ansar man noticed the woman leaving the ward with the baby and detained the woman red-handed.

Anwara was later handed over to CMCH police outpost, from where she was handed over to Panchliash police station.

Inspector Wali Uddin Akbar of Panchlaish said police arrested the woman and legal action was underway in this connection.
