‘Wife,’ five others arrested over lawyer Bappi murder

Lawyer Omar Faruk Bappi was murdered by his “wife” and five of her “friends” as he refused to socially accept her as his spouse, said investigators yesterday.

Earlier in the day, police arrested the six -- Rasheda Begum, 27, the woman; and Humayun Rashid, 28, Al Amin, 28, Parvej alias Ali, 24, Akbar Hossen alias Rubel, 23, and Jakir Hossen, 35.

Rasheda and Humayun were held in Comilla and the rest in the port city’s EPZ area, said Moin Uddin, additional superintendent of police of the Chittagong Metro Unit of Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI).

At a press conference at PBI Chittagong Headquarters, Moin said Bappi secretly married the woman one and a half years ago.

However, he said they could not recover any legal documents of their marriage.

The couple often quarrelled when Bappi threatened to divorce her, said the police official.

Meantime, Bappi’s family was looking for a bride for him, infuriating Rasheda.

On Saturday, Bappi, a lawyer of Chittagong District Judge Court, was found murdered in a West Bakalia residence rented by the woman in the port city.

His father Ali Ahmed filed a murder case accusing Rasheda and several other unnamed persons.

The arrestees will be produced before a Chittagong court with a seven-day remand prayer today.
