Water, sanitation for challenged people sought
Setting up accessible toilets designed to accommodate people with physical disabilities is a must, since it not only provides them the facility, but also ensures their rights, participants said at a roundtable discussion yesterday.
Action on Disability and Development International (ADD) arranged the discussion “Sustainable Water and Sanitation for the Women & Men with Disabilities” at a conference room of Bangla daily Bhorer Kagoj in the capital.
Addressing as the chief guest Md Wali Ullah, chief engineer of Department of Public Health Engineering, said, “To achieve SDGs we must provide proper facilities and rights to people with disability.”
Mahfuzur Rahman, programme officer of WaterAid, said recommendations should be taken into consideration from the physically challenged people before any project is executed, he added.
“Rural people with disability need more budget allocation,” opined Alok Majumder, country coordinator of Bangladesh WASH Alliance.
Salma Mahbub, general secretary of Bangladesh Society for the Change and Advocacy Nexus (B-SCAN), said, “Being a physically challenged person I know about problems faced by the disabled community more acutely. We often face water, sanitary and hygiene problems.”
Yakub Hossain, national convener of Freshwater Action Network South Asia (FANSA) Bangladesh, Hasin Jahan, country director of Practical Action Bangladesh, and Shafiqul Islam, country director of ADD International, also spoke.
