VC-backed teachers win Juta polls
The vice-chancellor backed panel of pro-Awami League teachers won the Jahangirnagar University Teachers' Association (Juta) election yesterday.
The panel bagged eight posts including the key leadership positions while the rival panel loyal to former VC Prof Shariff Enamul Kabir got the rest.
The 15-member executive committee of Juta is composed of president, general secretary, vice president, joint secretary, treasurer, and 10 members.
Prof Nurul Alam of Physics and Prof Bashir Ahmed of government and politics department were elected president and general secretary respectively.
Prof Nurul Alam got 275 votes, while his rival Prof Farid Ahmed bagged 235 votes.
Prof Rasheda Akhter was elected vice president, Associate Professor Awlad Hossain joint secretary, and Prof Md Nuhu Alam treasurer.
The executive members are Prof Abdul Mannan Chowdhury, Prof Shahedur Rashid, Prof Ali Azom Talukder, Prof Motaher Hossain, Prof Syed Hafizur Rahman, Associate Professor Abdul Mannan, Associate Professor Sayedur Rahman, Associate Professor Azharul Islam, Associate Professor Laizu Nasreen, and Assistant Professor Md Sabbir Alam. The voting took place at the university teachers' club from 9:00am till 1:30pm. Out of a total of 545 voters, 519 cast their votes.
Election Commissioner Prof AKM Abul Kalam announced the results around 7:00pm.
