Undemocratic govts dream of reigning forever

Gonoforum President Dr Kamal Hossain yesterday said no undemocratic government would be able to remain in power forever.

“We feel surprised when an undemocratic government says they are elected democratically,” Dr Kamal said.

He was speaking at a memorial meeting at Jatiya Press Club in the capital. Gonoforum organised the event to commemorate its three leaders -- Fazlul Kabir, Abul Hasnat and Raoshan Hakim.

Dr Kamal said all the undemocratic governments dream of being in power forever. But they forget that the power of people always defeats the autocratic force.

Pointing to the ruling Awami League government, the noted jurist said the present government thinks everything is going on in a right manner in the country. But people will have to inform them it is not, he added.

Dr Kamal said during the movement against the autocratic ruler, Ershad, in 1990, he had also dreamt of prolonging his power.

“But that didn't happen… fall of any undemocratic ruler is inevitable if people of this country become united,” he said.
