Taskforce to protect Ctg canals
A taskforce recently formed by Local Government Division will work to save Chittagong city's canals from encroachment.
Headed by Chittagong City Corporation Mayor AJM Nasir Uddin Chowdhury, the taskforce is comprised of representatives from seven other government organisations.
They are Department of Environment, Chittagong Development Authority, Water Development Board, Fire Service and Civil Defence, office of Chittagong Divisional Commissioner, office of Chittagong Deputy Commissioner and Chittagong Metropolitan Police.
The chief executive officer of the CCC was made the member secretary of the taskforce.
In a letter, issued on September 4, the LGD asked the taskforce to hold a meeting once a month and informed the LGD and Water Resources Ministry of its minutes.
CCC Acting Chief Executive Officer Dr Mostafijur Rahman told The Daily Star that they got the letter and will act accordingly.
“Our mayor has been sick for the past few days. Once he comes round, we will convene the meeting,” he added. The letter asked the taskforce to remove illegal structures from both the banks of the canals, re-excavate the waterbodies and take necessary steps for free flow of water.
It also directed the body to take legal actions against the grabbers and supervise the reclaimed space to stop recurrence of encroachment.
According to a CCC list, there are 42 canals in the city and none of those is free from grabbing and pollution.
