The deceased was identified as Abdus Sattar, 45, son of Akkel Ali. The injured were Alamgir, 38, Kamal, 52, Mostafa, 45, and in grave condition Iqbal, 35.
Local influential people were against Amin Mohammad Group’s housing project, located at Balur Math area from the beginning, alleged Giasuddin, a contractor of the project.
“They used to farm fish in the project site. They refused to hand over the land to the project authorities. They attacked the site on multiple occasions previously,” he said.
Last night, about 20-25 assailants attacked the project site around 1:30am, he alleged. They beat and stabbed the security guards mercilessly and fled.
As the men were rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, Sattar succumbed around 7:30am, said Bachhu Mia, a sub-inspector of the hospital’s police outpost.
