SC order on BGMEA building April 2

The Supreme Court yesterday deferred till April 2 the order on a petition filed by Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), seeking one year extension before bringing down its 15-storey building at Hatirjheel in the capital.

The apex court ordered the trade body to modify its undertaking and specify who will be held liable if the building is not relocated within the extension period.

Earlier, BGMEA's lawyer Advocate Quamrul Haque Siddiqui submitted an undertaking to the SC stating it will not seek further extension if the court grants one more year to relocate.

The undertaking also said that the current board of directors will remain liable if the building is not relocated by the extension period.

The four-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain returned the undertaking, saying that the current board may not remain in the office next year.
