With a view to raise awareness for preventing environmental pollution, Sabuj Paribesh Andolon officially started its journey through a vibrant launching ceremony in the capital yesterday.

Dhaka University Pro-Vice Chancellor (academic) Prof Nasreen Ahmad inaugurated the programme of the newly established environmental organisation in Shawkat Osman Auditorium of the Central Public Library.

At the programme, Bangladesh's One Day Internationals (ODI) captain Mashrafe Bin Mortaza said people of Bangladesh always use bins when they go abroad, but they do not follow the practice within the country and throw waste on the roadside.

Therefore, the people first need to change their mentality to prevent environmental pollution, he added.

Former governor of Bangladesh Bank Atiur Rahman said the government should not finance those projects which could pollute the environment.

Prof Nasreen said, “One should work to protect the environment, if he or she loves own country.”

Later, a cultural programme and a documentary screening on environmental degradation were held.

Delwar Hossain, coordinator of Sabuj Paribesh Andolon, presided over the programme attended by Dhaka Reporters' Unity General Secretary Syed Shukur Ali Shuvo, and Bangladesh Paribesh Sangbadik Forum President Kamrul Islam Chowdhury, among others.
