Road mishap takes a toll on RMG worker
Doctors amputated two toes of the right foot of a woman yesterday a day after a bus had run her right leg over in the capital's Malibagh area.
The accident occurred when Nilufar Begum, 40, a garment worker, got off the bus at Malibagh intersection on Friday.
Jamshed Al Moyeen, a witness, told The Daily Star that while passing through the intersection by a rickshaw he saw that the bus slowed down to drop passengers.
As soon as the woman had got down, the vehicle started moving faster and her foot went under its wheel, he said.
Immediately, locals and passengers took her to Sirajul Islam Medical College Hospital from where she was transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).
Later, the DMCH authorities referred her to National Institute of Traumatology & Orthopaedic Rehabilitation (Nitor) for better treatment. The operation was conducted there.
Dr Sabbir Ahmed, clinical assistant of Red Unit at Nitor, said four toes of the right foot of the victim were seriously injured. Two other toes are under observation, he said.
Those might be amputated too, he added.
Nilufar, a mother of four children, live in a rented house in Adabar area, said Ashikul Islam, one of her children.
After coming from Gopalganj four years ago, she started working at a garments factory in the same area, he added.
Ashikul said his mother went to Malibagh to meet one of their relatives.
Nilufar is worried whether she will get cured and be able to work again, he added.
A man, who identified himself as a representative of the bus owner at DMCH, wanted to give them Tk 2,500 only as compensation, said Ashikul, adding that but they refused to take it.
The accident took place when several people were maimed or killed in road accidents in Dhaka in recent times.
