Road crashes claim 7 lives

At least seven persons including two college students were killed in separate road accidents across the country yesterday.

In Dhaka, college student Mehedi Hasan Rifat, 17, and Jahangir Hossain, 20, died after their bike skidded off a road while getting on Mayor Mohammad Hanif Flyover.

Jahangir succumbed to his injuries at a private hospital in the capital while Mehedi died at Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH), reports our correspondent.

Two others were also injured in the accident, said Sub-inspector Mafiz Uddin of Jatrabari Police Station. They were admitted to DMCH, he added.

The accident took place while a group of youths were returning from Mawa at 5:30am yesterday, the officer further said.

In Barisal, another college student Ashique Hasan 20, and Mim, 22, were killed on the spot in a head-on collision between a bus and a bike in Kashipur area of Sadar upazila, police said.

The incident also left Faruk Hossain critically injured, who was admitted to Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital, police added.

In Narayanganj, schoolteacher Tahmina Akter Shiuli, 45, was killed after a Dhaka-bound truck ran her over while she was crossing a road in Mograpara Chaurasta area, police quoted her brother as saying.

She was assistant teacher of Roypara High School of Gazaria upazila in Munshiganj.

The body was sent to Narayanganj General Hospital for an autopsy, police said adding, the truck was seized but the driver fled.

In Kurigram, Nurnahar Begum, 45, was killed and six others were injured when a Dhaka-bound bus collided head on with a battery-run auto-rickshaw near Chhinay Bazar under Rajahat upazila, police said quoting locals.

The injured were taken to a local hospital. Of them, two were later referred to Rangpur Medical College Hospital, police added.

Meanwhile in Jhenidah, an unidentified man was killed and 20 others were injured when a Dhaka-bound bus fell into a ditch beside Kaliganj-Kotchandpur road, police quoted locals as saying.

The injured were taken to Kaliganj Upazila Health Complex. The body was sent for autopsy.
