Police foil JCD demo

Police foiled a procession brought out by Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) in Kazirbazar area of Sylhet city yesterday.

Demanding immediate release of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia from jail, Sylhet district and city units of JCD brought out the procession around 3:00pm.

The procession led by Chowdhury Mohammad Sohel, former joint secretary of JCD Sylhet city unit, and Afsar Khan, former joint secretary of the same unit, was going towards Bandar Bazar area in the city.

Police intercepted the procession in Kazirbazar area and fired blank shots and lobbed tear gas canisters at them, said the party men.

Twenty leaders and activists were also arrested by police, claimed Khandakar Muktadir, an adviser to BNP chief Khaleda Zia.

“Thirty of our party men were also injured,” he added.

Contacted, police said the procession was brought out without a permission. "When we requested them to stop, they attacked us," said Mosarraf Hossain, officer-in-charge of Kotwali Police Station.

No case was lodged till filing of this report.
