Poking head out of bus gets SSC examinee killed

A Secondary School Certificate examinee was killed in Mohakhali today while poking his neck out of a bus window and banging his head on a pole in the process.

Deceased Sakibul Islam, 15, was a student of Banani Bidya Niketon School and was on his way to appear for English first part test in Dhaka cantonment area, said Golam Rabbani, a sub-inspector of Banani Police Station.

At one stage, he popped out his head of the bus window near Mohakhali flyover. His head banged with a lamppost and got seriously wounded around 9:30am.

He was rushed to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) where he was pronounced dead.

Shihab was the son of Jahangir Alam, a resident of Badda.

‘Please save me!’

Witness Shagor Ahmed Bhuiyan, owner of Siam Paint and Hardware store located yards away from the incident site, said the boy’s head was stuck between the pole and the bus.

“I heard a banging sound and suddenly noticed a boy’s head stuck between a bus and a lamppost,” he told The Daily Star. “He was shouting – brother, please save me.”

“We rushed to the bus. If the driver had driven the bus backwards, the boy could have been saved.  But the stubborn driver kept on running the vehicle,” Shagor said.

At one stage the driver fled the scene.

Visiting the spot, this correspondent noticed that particular lamppost was a bit closer to the road posing threat to careless passengers.
