Poet Jasimuddin's 42nd death anniversary today

Today is the 42th death anniversary of Jasimuddin, a Bengali poet, songwriter, and folklore collector.

Also known as the polli-kobi, Jasimuddin was born on January 1, 1903 at Tambulkhana in Faridpur. He was a graduate of  University of Calcutta. The poet is remembered for his superb rendition of Bengali folklore. His poetry is a demonstration to the simple, timeless appeal of rural Bengal and folk life. He was also a writer of fine prose -- fluent, witty, and expressive. 

In 1969, Jasimuddin was awarded DLitt by Rabindra Bharati University. He also won Ekushey Padak (1976) and Swadhinata Dibas Puroshkar (posthumous, 1978). Jasimuddin died in Dhaka in 1976 and was buried in his own village -- Govindapur. On this occasion, Faridpur district administration will place floral wreaths at his grave and arrange a discussion and milad mahfil in the village.
