PM vows to uphold human rights
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday reaffirmed the country's commitment to upholding human rights on the occasion of International Human Rights Day today.
Hasina in a statement said, "I…reaffirm Bangladesh's unwavering commitment to upholding the human rights and fundamental freedoms of all people around the globe as enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights."
Bangladesh has always been at the global forefront in demonstrating its consistent engagement with human rights mechanisms and institutions and in living up to its national and international obligations to promote and protect human rights, reads the statement.
In another statement on the same occasion, BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia alleged that human rights situation in the country significantly deteriorated due to repression by the ruling party, reports our staff correspondent.
The government snatched the people's democratic rights, and human rights are grossly being violated,alleged the former prime minister.
"People…are falling prey to enforced disappearances and extrajudicial killings," she further alleged.
"We will have to enforce unity to establish democracy…" Khaleda stressed.
