One held over murder of mother, son

In connection with the murder of a mother and son in Sylhet, police early yesterday arrested a person.

Construction businessman, Nazmul Hossain, son of Abdul Karim of Muktirchak area in Shahporan of Sadar upazila, was arrested from the city's Bateswar area.

Nazmul was present when the mother and son were murdered, Golam Kawsar Dastagir, assistant commissioner of Kotwali Police Station of Sylhet Metropolitan Police (SMP), told the press yesterday afternoon.

Police produced Nazmul before the court of Sylhet Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Saifuzzaman Hero, who granted 7-day remand for Nazmul, said the assistant commissioner.

He said, “We came to know that Nazmul was connected to the murder, but the accurate time, motive and other details are yet to be known.”

On Sunday morning, police recovered the bodies of Rokeya Begum, 40, a parlour owner, and her son Rabiul Islam, 16, from a house in Kharpara residential area of Sylhet city's Mirabazar.

Rokeya's brother Jakir Hossain filed a case with Kotwali Police Station on Monday accusing 4 to 5 unnamed people.

The only survivor, Rokeya's 5-year-old daughter, earlier told the police that their former house help Tania along with some other men killed her mother and brother.

Both Nazmul and deceased Rokeya were supposed to start a new beauty parlour, said the assistant commissioner. In this regard, Nazmul took some money from her, he said, adding that they were trying to arrest other people associated with the murder.
