OIC support expected
Bangladesh Foreign Minister Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali has hoped that the OIC foreign ministers at their meeting to be held in Dhaka in May would mount fresh pressure on Myanmar to take back Rohingya refugees.
He also hoped that the refugees' safe resettlement would be ensured with dignity in their homeland.
Mahmood Ali was attending a dinner hosted by Bangladesh High Commissioner to India Syed Muazzem Ali in honour of New Delhi-based ambassadors of OIC member-countries at the High Commission's Maitree Hall in India on Wednesday.
The foreign minister appreciated the support the OIC countries extended to Bangladesh in coping with the influx of tens of thousands of Rohingya refugees.
He pointed out that Bangladesh is providing shelter to over one million forcibly displaced people who fled atrocities in Rakhine state of Myanmar. He thanked the OIC members for coming forward with relief assistance for the Rohingyas.
Mahmood Ali is now in New Delhi on a visit to attend the Raisina Dialogue, a premier foreign policy event of the Indian government.
Muazzem Ali thanked the OIC for sponsoring a UN resolution against Myanmar in last November on the Rohingya issue. The resolution, which was adopted in the General Assembly's Third Committee, was the result of extensive international support due to the cooperation achieved by the OIC with many states.
Kamrul Ahsan, secretary (consular) at the foreign ministry, also spoke on the occasion.
