Nine more remanded
A Rangpur court yesterday granted a three-day remand each for nine of the accused in a case filed over attacking the Hindus at Thakurbari village of Rangpur Sadar upazila on November 10.
Senior Judicial Magistrate Quamrul Islam issued the order after police produced them before the court with a 10-day remand each, said Ferdous Ahmed, sub-inspector of Rangpur Sadar Police Station and the case's investigation officer.
The accused are Sirajul Islam, a union parishad member; Ahsan Ullah alias Angur; Lebu Mia; Asad Sheikh; Rahidul Islam; Mamud Mia; Abdul Hannan; Abu Bakkar Siddique alias Nayan and Delwar Hossain. The court, however, did not grant remand for another accused, Zahidul Islam.
Police brought the 10 accused to the court in the afternoon under tight security.
Meanwhile, Narayan Chandra Chanda, state minister for fisheries and livestock, visited Thakurbari village around noon yesterday and spoke to the affected persons there.
Those behind the attack must be punished, he said, adding that police are working in this regard.
The perpetrators would be punished regardless of their political identities, he added.
Former water resources minister Ramesh Chandra Sen, former state minister for home ministry Shamsul Haque Tuku, lawmaker from Dinajpur-1 Monoranjanshil Gopal and lawmaker Ranjit Roy also accompanied him.
