Young minds explore science and technology

Three-day long science fair begins in Rajshahi

From innovative solutions to traffic jam to creating environment-friendly industries numerous scientific solutions for everyday problems were displayed on the inaugural day of a three-day science festival at Rajshahi Model School and College in the city.

Rajshahi Divisional Commissioner Nurur Rahman inaugurated the fair with Rajshahi DC SM Abdul Kader in the chair. Rajshahi district administration assisted by National Museum of Science and Technology organised the fair as part of observing science and technology week.

More than 250 students from 82 schools and colleges in the city and nine upazilas of the district participated in the science fair.

A group of students who came up with an automated sensor to detect vehicle overload said they were inspired to do a project on traffic management after last year's road safety movement.

“We want to make people more environmentally conscious, and use science to save the planet,” said a student of Martyred Mamun Mahmud Police Lines School and College whose team demonstrated how brick kiln smoke can be used to make gypsum fertiliser.

There were also projects on utilising the river Padma's water into a source of electricity and harvesting rainwater for household use.
