Clean up after oneself to clean Bangladesh
Wearing gloves and masks and holding brooms in hands, several hundred students yesterday carried out a cleaning campaign at Rabindra Sarobar in Dhaka's Dhanmondi area to generate public awareness for keeping the country clean.
The students, from different educational institutions in the capital, collected trash including plastic bottles, polythene bags and paper from 20 spots, and dumped those into a designated place.
"Poriborton Chai", a social platform, organised the two-hour campaign that started at 11:00am as a central programme to observe "Let's Clean up the Country Day 2018".
The platform organised the campaign at 164 locations across the country with more than one lakh people voluntarily taking part. The organisers claim to have arranged the biggest cleaning campaign so far in the country.
Sharing her experience, Bangladesh Islami University student Jannatul Mawa Tonni said, “If we dump our own garbage at designated places properly and encourage others to do so, the country will remain clean always.”
Shardul Nowrose Prottoy, a ninth grader of Mirpur Bangla High School and College, said, “If we, the students, start it now, other people will be inspired by us. Then the environment will be clean and safe gradually.”
After the campaign, eminent educationist Prof Abdullah Abu Sayeed administrated an oath to the students, urging them to keep the environment clean and motivate others to do so.
“The world will be clean if we can clean up the dirt from our mind,” said Prof Sayeed, also the founder of Bishwo Shahitto Kendro.
Fida Haq, chairman of Poriborton Chai, read out a memorandum addressing Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Mayor Sayeed Khokon. In the memorandum, he urged the mayor to take appropriate measures to keep the city clean.
Noted singer Ferdous Wahid and film actress Swagata, among others, spoke on the occasion.
Uttara, Mirpur, Jurain and Farmgate are the other places in the capital where the campaign took place.
