Sylhet BNP leader denied bail, sent to jail
A Sylhet court yesterday sent district BNP General Secretary Ali Ahmed to jail after rejecting his bail petition in a case filed for obstruction of police duty during the campaigning of city corporation election in July.
Session Judge Mofizur Rahman Bhuiyan delivered the order as Ali Ahmed did not appear before the court in time, said Additional Public Prosecutor Mofur Ali.
On July 21, BNP mayoral candidate Ariful Haque Chowdhury and around 100 of his supporters staged a sit-in near the DC (south) office of Sylhet Metropolitan Police, protesting arrest of two supporters.
That day, a case was filed accusing 39 BNP activists of obstructing police from performing their official duties.
On July 24, the HC granted bail to the accused and directed them to appear before the lower court by August 8.
Nasim Hossain, president of Sylhet city unit BNP, said as Ali Ahmed's mother died during the time, he could not appear before the court.
