‘Subservient’ foreign policy to blame: Mirza Fakhrul
BNP yesterday alleged that the government could not solve the Rohingya crisis yet due to its "subservient" foreign policy.
"Government's weakness is the main reason for failing to take any effective step to send back Rohingyas to Myanmar," alleged Miza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, secretary general of the party.
The senior BNP leader said this while placing a wreath at the grave of party founder Ziaur Rahman on the occasion of Jatiyatabadi Muktijoddha Dal's founding anniversary. Leaders and activists of the organisation accompanied him at the time.
Fakhrul alleged that the prime minister has so far not met any world leader nor visited other countries over the issue.
"Even the government has not been able to take up the issue seriously at the United Nations. That's why the country's people have to bear such a huge burden," he claimed.
Fakhrul said China and India are the two countries that can play a major role in this regard and mount pressure on Myanmar to take back its citizens. "But the government does not have the capacity to convince the two powerful countries to do so," he alleged.
Fakhrul alleged that the freedom fighters, who fought for the country and liberated it, have now been subjected to repression for their efforts to restore democracy -- the main spirit of the Liberation War.
"We've long been witnessing with regret that the spirit of the Liberation War in Bangladesh has been destroyed," he alleged. "A plot is ongoing to make Bangladesh a truly subservient country," he claimed.
Fakhrul also accused the ruling party of conducting a "false" campaign, involving Ziaur Rahman with the August 15, 1975 carnage while Khaleda Zia and Tarique Rahman with August 21, 2004 grenade attacks for political gain and to divert people's attention from its misrule and failures to deliver on all fronts.
