Scrutinise candidates' wealth statements: TIB

Yesterday, Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) called upon the Election Commission to scrutinise the wealth statements of election aspirants and their family members properly, and take legal actions if any inconsistencies or evidence of corruption is found.

Issuing a statement, the graft watchdog also made a similar call to the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

Prior to each election, along with nomination papers, candidates also submit statements of their wealth or income-expenditure. These statements are important to ensure their transparency as public representatives, said TIB Executive Director Iftekharuzzaman.

Referring to media reports, Iftekharuzzaman said wealth of many candidates and their family members have increased manifold from what they had shown in the past election.

“It is imperative to scrutinise whether this [increase] is legal and legitimate,” he said.
