Road crashes kill nine in a day

Nine people were killed and two others injured in road accidents in six districts yesterday, according to reports from our correspondents.

In Tangail, a trucker was killed and his helper injured when their truck hit from behind another truck parked beside Bangabandhu Bridge link road in Soratoil area of Kalihati upazila.

Locals said the accident took place early in the morning when there was dense fog.

Mohendra Sarkar, 45, from Kathaltoly village in Kaliakoir upazila of Gazipur, died on the spot, said Mosharaf Hossain, officer-in-charge of Bangabandhu Bridge East Police Station.

His helper Razib, 25, from the same upazila, was taken to Tangail General Hospital, he said.

The truck that hit another one got damaged in the incident.

The accident caused a long tailback on the both sides of the busy road, said witnesses, adding that the situation became normal an hour later when the wreckage was removed.

In Chapainawabganj, two motorbike riders were killed as a truck hit their bike in the town's Kalyanpur area.

Mizanur Rahman Palash, 32, and Moshiur Rahman, 31, from College Para area in Gomostapur upazila, died instantly, said police.

In Chattogram, two people were killed as a lorry fell on a CNG-run auto-rickshaw after the former flipped over in the city's CEPZ intersection.

The deceased -- Mohammad Raju, 28, from Barguna, and the other whose identity could not be known immediately -- were in the auto-rickshaw, said police.

In Cumilla, two people were killed and three others injured when a fruits-laden pickup fell into a ditch beside Dhaka-Chattrogram highway in Putia area of Daudkandi upazila.

The deceased are pickup driver Based, 33, from the upazila; and fruits trader Jashim Uddin, 30, from Titas upazila.

The injured -- Shakhawat, 55, Abul Basar, 35, and Jibon, 28 -- were taken to Daudkandi Upazila Health Complex.

In Feni, motorcyclist Jahidul Islam, 20, a student of Munsirhat Fazil Madrasa, was killed and his co-rider injured when a truck hit their motorbike from the opposite direction in Kalabagan area of Fulgazi upazila, said police. The injured -- Abdul Jabbar -- is Jahidul's friend, said locals.

In Munshiganj, a man was killed after a bus ran him over on Dhaka-Mawa highway near Keyotchira bus stand in Sreenagar upazila, said locals. The identity of the deceased could not be known immediately.
