Road accidents kill five, injure seven
At least five people were killed and seven were injured in road accidents across the country in the last two days, according to reports from our correspondents and news agencies.
In Gazipur, two people were killed and five were injured when a Dhaka-bound minibus hit a roadside tree after its driver lost control of the vehicle at Bhuterbazar in Kapasia upazila on Tuesday afternoon, said police.
The deceased are Manik Mia, 30, from Kapasia upazila and Saifuzzaman, 32, from Chattogram.
Locals rescued the five injured and took them to a local health complex.
In Rangpur, a motorcyclist was killed after a truck hit her vehicle in Pirganj upazila on Tuesday.
The deceased is Jamuna Rani, 38, from Gaibandha.
Police said the accident occurred around 10am at Mokimpur on Laldighi-Baluahat Road, leaving Jamuna dead on the spot.
Police seized the truck, and a case was filed.
In Nilphamari, the driver of a brick crusher machine was killed as he lost control over the machine and hit a stationary truck in the district town on Tuesday.
The deceased is Abu Bakor, 27, from Sutipara village in Sadar Upazila.
Police said the accident occurred at noon in front of the sub-registrar’s office. Abu Bakor was critically injured and died on the way to Nilphamari Sadar Hospital.
In Kurigram, a woman was killed when a battery-run auto-rickshaw hit her on Ulipur-Thetraye road in Mithir Bazar area in Ulipur upazila yesterday.
The deceased is Majida Begum, 50, from Gunayegachh union of the upazila.
“Majida was injured seriously and was taken to Ulipur Upazila Health Complex, where the physician declared her dead,” said Dr Subhas Chandra Sarkar, the upazila health and family planning officer.
Police detained the auto-rickshaw driver Shirajul Islam, 30.
In Chattogram, two people were injured when a train hit a school microbus at a rail-crossing in Hathazari upazila yesterday.
The injured were admitted to Chattogram Medical College Hospital, said police. Injured Azizul Haque, 30, was driving the microbus and the other injured is a school’s staffer; her identity could not be known immediately, they added.
The incident occurred at Paschim Chararkul level crossing around 8:30am when a Chattogram city-bound train hit a microbus of Rowsan Grammar High School.
As there was no gatekeeper, the microbus driver did not see the signal. Locals and police rushed to the spot and sent the duo to hospital, police said.
