Man held for killing wife in Ctg

Police yesterday arrested a man for killing his wife in Halishahar of Chattogram city on October 26.

Police also seized the knife that the arrestee -- Jahid Hossain Raju, 28, son of Harunur Rashid from Khagrachari -- had used to decapitate his wife, Sumi Akter, 20, after strangling her to death with the help of two others.

Sumi's decapitated body was found under a cfulvert of near Islam Mia Brick Field in Chhotopool area on October 26.

Addressing a press conference, Amena Begum, additional commissioner (crime and operation) of Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP), said the relations between Sumi, daughter of Shahidul Islam from Khulna, and Raju, a carpenter, turned sour within several years of their marriage as she used to engage in phone conversations with unscrupulous callers.

Raju discussed his situation with his friend Abdul Jalil and his wife Ferdousi and they, according to their plan, strangled Sumi to death in Raju's house on October 26.

Later, Raju dismembered the head from the body and dumped the body in a drain beneath the culvert, said Amena, adding that and he dumped the head at Paitta Dighir Par graveyard of Beparipara.

Police filed a case after the body was recovered and they recovered Sumi's head from the graveyard following Raju's confession, said Obaidul Haque, officer-in-charge of Halishahar Police Station.

Abdul Jalil and his wife Ferdousi are still on the run.
