Immigration police official held with gold bars
Customs officials held an assistant sub-inspector (ASI) of immigration police with three gold bars at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on Monday evening.
Kamrul Islam Milon, 40, was later handed over to immigration police, said an official at the Customs House at the airport.
The ASI was intercepted at gate no. 6 as he was heading out of the airport, in plainclothes, carrying a school bag. As on-duty officials insisted on searching him, Kamrul tried to escape. He was later held with the help of other agency members, the official said.
The ASI at one stage threw the gold bars, weighing around 400 grams, under a nearby table as members of different agencies surrounded him.
He later denied that the gold bars, worth around Tk 20 lakh, belonged to him. Witnesses, however, testified that it was the ASI who dropped them, the customs official said.
Contacted, Othello Chowdhury, deputy commissioner of Dhaka Customs House, confirmed the incident and said steps are being taken in this regard.
The ASI was on leave, according to another customs official.
Special Superintendent of Immigration Police and Officer-in-Charge of Airport Immigration could not be reached for comments despite multiple attempts.
