'Hizb ut-Tahrir leader' arrested

The Counter Terrorism (CT) unit of Chattogram Metropolitan Police said they arrested an alleged leader of banned Islamist outfit Hizb ut-Tahrir in the city's Kotwali area on Sunday.

Mohammad Shahidullah, deputy commissioner (DC) of the CT unit, said the arrestee, Sabqat Ahmed, 20, is the outfit's “chief of private universities unit in Chattogram”.

Sabqat is a mechanical engineering student at University of Creative Technology, Chittagong in Chandgaon area.

On information, a CT team of police arrested Sabqat around 11:00pm, raiding his house in Kotwali area, said DC Shahidullah. 

Posters and leaflets propagating radical ideologies of Hizb ut-Tahrir were seized from Sabqat's possession, he said, adding, “Sabqat leads a group of 25 students who study at different private universities in Chattogram... They had put up posters in different areas of the city, asking people to boycott the 11th parliamentary polls.”

Five followers of Sabqat fled the scene and drives are on to arrest them, DC Shahidullah also said.
