5 dead, 4 injured in road accidents

At least five people died and four injured in separate road accidents over the last two days in Sylhet, Jhenidah and Chattogram in the country.

In Sylhet’s Chowdhury area of Golapganj upazila, a collision between a bus and a CNG-run autorickshaw around 4:00pm yesterday left two people dead and four others injured.   

The deceased were identified as Joynul Islam, 40, from Shahbagh area of Zakiganj upazila; and Alamin Ahmed, 28, from Golapganj municipality area, reports our correspondent in Sylhet.

Quoting witnesses, Officer-in-Charge AKM Fazlul Haque Shibly of Golapganj Police Station said a Sylhet-bound bus from Zakiganj upazila collided with the auto-rickshaw, leaving Joynul dead on the spot.

“Alamin died after he was taken to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital. The injured [four] are undergoing treatment at the hospital,” he said, adding that the bus was seized but its driver managed to flee the scene.

In Kaliganj upazila of Jhenidah, two people died in separate road crashes yesterday morning and Tuesday night.

The dead are Khairul Islam, 26, son of Rabiul Islam from Pukuria village; and Shamsuzzaman Riku, 38, son of Hazi Moslem Uddin from Shibnagar village, reports our correspondent in Jhenidah. 

On Wednesday morning around 10:00am, human haulier driver Khairul died on the spot as he lost control over his vehicle, on way to Naldanga Bazar, and drove into a roadside tree, said locals and police.

The night before, Shamsuzzaman died on the spot around 8:30pm when the motorbike he and two of his friends were riding on, toward Dulalmundia Bazar, was rammed from behind by a truck near Kawsar Ali brick kiln.  

His friends -- Parvez Hossain, 32, and Roky Hossain, 35, sustained injury and were taken to a local hospital. 

The body of the deceased was sent to Jhenidah Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy, said Younus Ali, OC of Kaliganj Police Station

In Chattogram city, a woman was killed after being run over by a truck in Hill View area under Panchlaish thana yesterday afternoon, reports our Chittagong University correspondent.  

Shahida Akhter, 40, wife of Abu Tayab, was pronounced dead by doctors around 6:00pm after locals brought her to Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) with critical injuries, said CMCH police outpost’s Nayek Mohammad Amin.
