281 cases recorded in November

At least 281 women and girls faced various types of violence including rape, murder and sexual assault in November this year, according to a report by Bangladesh Mahila Parishad (BMP).

The women's rights organisation revealed the statistics in a press statement yesterday.

Of the victims, 39 were raped, 13 gang-raped and seven were killed after rape -- bringing the total number of rape victims to 59 across the country, reads the report.

There were eight incidents of rape attempts on women, 10 molestation incidents while four were sexual assault incidents. Four women were killed by fire, 10 were abducted, 15 women and girls were trafficked, and one girl was sold to a brothel, according to the report by BMP.

Fifteen women were tortured for dowry while 11 were killed. Twelve were victims of eve teasing, 22 committed suicide and 18 died of mysterious causes. 

Fifty-one women and girls were killed and there were attempted murders on three other women. Three girls faced child marriage and 14 child marriages were prevented. Seventeen women were tortured physically, five domestic workers were tortured, and one of them committed suicide.

BMP's legal aid sub-council prepared the report on the basis of news reports published in 14 national dailies.
