Mugging attempt leaves vendor dead on footbridge

A street vendor was stabbed to death in an attempted mugging incident on a footbridge at Shahbagh in the capital yesterday morning.

The dead is Nurun Nabi Majumder, 23, from Faridganj of Chandpur.

His brother Shah Paran Majumder said the incident took place on the footbridge between Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) and BIRDEM Hospital. Several other vendors were also selling different items there.

The mugger, Khairul Anam, took a knife from his brother’s display and demanded Tk 200 while brandishing the knife in front of his face, Sub-inspector Dipankar Chandra Das of Ramna Police Station said quoting Shah Paran.

After Nurun Nabi refused to comply, the mugger suddenly stabbed him in the neck as he looked away to seek help from fellow vendors, Dipankar said, adding that the attacker appears to be a drug addict.

Shah Paran said he rushed his brother to nearby Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical College Hospital where doctors pronounced him dead.

A mob in the meantime beat up the mugger and later handed him over to police. Police then admitted him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
