Minorities seek 60 reserved seats in parliament
Bangladesh Hindu-Bouddha-Christian Oikya Parishad yesterday placed an eight-point proposal to the Election Commission including reserving 60 seats in parliament for minorities.
Parishad leaders, led by its general secretary Rana Dasgupta, placed the proposal to the chief election commissioner at the EC office in Dhaka ahead of the 11th parliamentary election expected to be held next year.
They also proposed to amend representation of the people's order to stipulate that each political party must have 20 percent religious and ethnic minorities at all levels, says a press release.
The minority leaders also suggested reintroduction of “no-vote” in electoral system, declaring minority-dominated areas as vulnerable and ensuring due security there and deployment of army as a striking force.
The parishad leaders including Subrata Chowdhury, Nirmol Rozario, Jayanta Kumar Deb, Tapash Kumar Paul, Nirmol Kumar Chatterjee were present on the occasion.
