SUDIPTO KILLING

Mastermind still at large

Around three months have passed since Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) leader of Chittagong city unit Sudipto Biswas was brutally killed, but police are yet to arrest the mastermind behind the killing.

On October 6 last year, Sudipto was beaten to death near his house in the port city's Nalapara area.

Meanwhile, the victim's family has recently shifted to elsewhere in the city due to security concern.

This correspondent has talked to Sudipto's father Meghnath Biswas.

Meghnath, also a retired school teacher, said, “The criminals are very influential..."

“They killed my son just a month into his joining a job, shattering my all dreams,” he said. “We have left the house after his (Sudipto's) killing due to security reason.”

“As the criminals are influential, I am afraid that I will not get justice," he added.

In the meantime, sources in BCL said Sudipto wanted the organisation to be run by incumbent leaders without interference of former leaders.

His stance might have aggrieved some former leaders, resulting in the brutal murder, they added.

Contacted, Imran Ahmed Imu, president of Chittagong city BCL unit, said they would announce tougher programmes demanding the arrest of the mastermind behind the killing.

“Police said they had got information about the mastermind, but they could not arrest the culprit in the last three months,” said Imran.

“Police initially arrested four accused but there is no significant headway in the investigation.”

Asked, Ruhul Amin, inspector (investigation) of Sadarghat Police Station, said they arrested four persons and recovered the iron rod used in the killing as per the account of one of the arrestees.

Of the arrestees, two gave confessional statements before a court under section 164, said Ruhul, also investigating officer.

“Two of the arrestees directly took part in the murder and they disclosed the names of some people who hired them to take part in the killing mission.”

“As the names have been published in the media, the criminals are now on the run,” he said.

But police are conducting drives to arrest them, he said, adding that if they are arrested, the mastermind behind the killing would be identified.

Contacted, SM Mostain Hossain, deputy commissioner (south) of Chittagong Metropolitan Police, said they have come across some names as per the statements of the arrestees.

He said, “All the persons who were involved in this murder will be arrested very soon.”

About the security of the Sudipto's family, he said, “We are in touch with the family and we are concerned about it too.”
