Marzan had hands behind most militant attacks: IGP
Top “Neo JMB” leader Nurul Islam Marzan, who allegedly coordinated the Gulshan café attack, was involved with the most of the militant attacks carried out in Dhaka and northern parts of the country, the inspector general of police said today.
“We had information that Marzan would enter Dhaka through Mohammadpur Beribadh. So, we set up a check post in the area. Marzan along with another militant Saddam Hossain appeared the scene later,” AKM Shahidul Haque said.
The IGP was talking to reporters after attending an international conference on militancy organised by the Department of Criminology of Dhaka University at Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban at the campus.
Earlier Friday, Marzan and his aide Saddam were killed in a “gunfight” with police in the capital.
When asked about the exact number of the militants involved with the “Neo JMB”, Shahidul Haque said, “Most of the militants were either killed or arrested by law enforcers.”
Regarding terror financing, the IGP said the fund comes through “money laundering”.
“Our weak point is that we don’t have any de-radicalisation and rehabilitation center in the country. The militants can continue their recruitment process from jail,” the IGP said.
Saddam was charge-sheeted accused in five murder cases, he added.
