Man to die for killing niece
A court in Gazipur yesterday sentenced a man to death for killing his seven-year-old niece in Chakpara area of Sreepur upazila in Gazipur district on October 30, 2015.
The court also sentenced his two associates to life term imprisonment.
Mohammed Ripon Miah, 33, son of Hasmat Ali, was sentenced to death. The lifers are Rabiul Islam, 20, son of Mohammad Rahim of Bogra, and Mohammed Mozaffar, 19, son of Mohammad Mostafa of Sherpur.
The court of Gazipur district and sessions judge AKM Enamul Haque announced the verdict in front of the three.
According to the prosecution, seven-year-old Nazmin used to live with her grandparents as her mother remarried and lived separately, after divorcing Nazmin's father.
There was a dispute among Hasmat Ali, the victim's grandfather, and three of his neighbours over a piece of land.
On October 30 in 2015, while Nazmin was sleeping beside her grandmother, Ripon, son of Hasmat Ali, and his cohorts took her to a secluded place and hacked her to death in a ploy to blame the murder on the neighbours.
The child's mother filed a case against the three neighbours with Sreepur Police Station.
However, during investigation, Khandaker Aminur Rahman, sub-inspector of the police station and the case's investigation officer, found out about Ripon's involvement, and arrested Ripon and his associates.
Based on the probe and testimony of witnesses, the court announced the verdict yesterday. The neighbours were acquitted from the case.
