Law against denial of Liberation War facts drafted
Responding to demands from different organisations, the Law Commission has drafted the Liberation War Denial Crimes Act, with provisions of punishment for denial of historically established facts and settled issues.
The draft will be finalised after soliciting opinions from people in multiple phases, the commission's chief research officer Fowzul Azim told The Daily Star.
In the first phase, the commission chairman and members will talk to resource persons including researchers on the draft this morning at its office, and then the draft will be modified and made public for people's opinions, he said.
After receiving public views, the commission will finalise the draft and then it will be sent to the government for formulating a law, Fowzul said. The official said the punishment for denial of the Liberation War related issues would be determined on the opinions from relevant people.
The Law Commission has received requests from different organisations to recommend the government for formulating such a law, he added.
On January 28, Law Minister Anisul Huq told The Daily Star that there should be a law against the denial of Liberation War related issues, and he heard that the Law Commission had prepared a draft. "Once we receive the draft, we will look into the matter," he added. Earlier in that day, Ekattorer Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee submitted a 12-point demand to the law ministry, including passage of such an act.
