Laid off staff of mushroom centre besiege office for reinstatement
Around hundred employees of the National Mushroom Development and Extension Centre in Savar, outside the capital, yesterday laid siege to the office building demanding their jobs back.
The centre laid off 115 employees, including researchers and technical officers, after completing its last project on June 30. Meanwhile, it could not arrange fund from the government for its new projects because of previous fund embezzlement, said demonstrators.
Saleh Ahmed, one of the project directors, alleged that the media ran “baseless” reports on project fund embezzlement which prompted the government to take such decision, however, not a single penny was misappropriated.
The demonstrators released Nirod Chandra Sarker, the deputy director, after confining him to the centre for an hour, as he assured them of convincing the agriculture ministry for funding new projects.
