Journo sued under section 57 for 'defamatory status'

Journalist Anis Alamgir was sued yesterday for posting a “defamatory status” on Facebook about Hindu Goddess Saraswati on January 22.

Upon hearing about the incident, Dhaka Cyber Tribunal Judge Md Saiful Islam directed officer-in-charge of Dhanmondi Police Station to record the complaint as a first information report (FIR) over the allegation brought against Anis under Section 57 of the ICT Act.

The tribunal also directed police to probe the matter and submit a report.

Advocate Sushanta Kumar Basu filed a case against Anis, a journalist at a private television channel. The complainant also appealed to the tribunal to issue an arrest warrant against Anis.

On January 23, Anis Alamgir, a part-time teacher at Dhaka University, made another post on his Facebook clarifying his position on the post he made the previous day.
