IPU, UNHCR launch Bangla version of handbook on statelessness
Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) jointly launched the Bengali version of “Nationality and Statelessness: Handbook for Parliamentarians” yesterday.
Speaker of Jatiya Sangshad Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury attended the launching ceremony as chief guest at the Bangabandhu International Conference Centre (BICC) in the capital.
First published in 2005 and revised in 2014, the handbook provides detailed information on contemporary statelessness issues, development of international legal doctrine, good practice examples and possible solutions.
It also recommends actions that can be taken by parliamentarians, government officials, civil society organisations and others to address the challenges of statelessness, said a press release of UNHCR.
Shirin Sharmin lauded the initiative and said, “There is also a need for much deeper understanding of the inter-linkages between nationality, statelessness, refugees and all the other related issues which come together."
By launching the Bangla version of an important international publication on statelessness, Saber Hossain Chowdhury, president of IPU, said, “We hope to raise the awareness, knowledge and understanding of MPs in Bangladesh on this subject.”
Shinji Kubo, UNHCR Country Representative in Bangladesh said he is confident that this handbook will serve as a useful tool to reduce and ultimately eradicate the problem of statelessness.
