Imran H Sarker, Sanatan get bail
Gonojagoron Mancha spokesperson Imran H Sarker and cultural activist Sanatan Ullash secured bail yesterday, a day after arrest warrants were issued against them in a defamation case filed for making “derogatory remarks” about Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
The court of First Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Sheikh Chhamidul Islam granted them bail after they surrendered before it and sought bail in the case.
The court passed the bail order upon a Tk 10,000 bond with two guarantors for each accused.
Earlier on Wednesday, the same court cancelled their bail and issued arrest warrants against both as they skipped the hearing of the case without any steps taken by their lawyers for their non-appearance.
On May 31, BCL leader Golam Rabbani filed the case with the court against the two. The court then summoned them to appear before it.
According to the case statement, Imran and Sanatan chanted defamatory slogans against the premier on May 27 over the removal of the statue of Lady Justice from the Supreme Court premises.
The Supreme Court authorities removed the statue on May 26 early morning and later reinstalled it near the court's Annex Building.
