Implementing mega projects properly can ensure 10pc GDP growth

Says Planning Minister

Proper implementation of some mega projects like construction of the Padma Bridge will ensure 10 percent GDP growth due to improved connectivity across the country, observed Planning Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal yesterday.

“The country will be able to achieve the feat of 10 percent GDP growth in 2028-29,” said Kamal at the annual performance agreement signing ceremony at the National Economic Council office in Dhaka.

As per the rule, public servants under their respective ministries sign an agreement with the government, committing their best performance in a year.

“By the end of 2020, Bangladesh will achieve 8 percent GDP in a year. We have to keep up the 8 percent GDP growth at least for three consecutive years after 2020,” the minister said.

“We have to come out from our stereotypical thinking. In the coming years, the education and revenue sectors will witness massive reforms,” the minister said.

The education system would be modernised and more people would be brought under the tax net so that the burden of revenue collection is reduced, Kamal said.

The minister also encouraged public employees to be more sincere in project implementation. Otherwise, ultimately the government has to bear the responsibility of the failure in project implementation, he said.
