Healthcare services disrupted again at BSMMU
Healthcare services at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) were disrupted again today as the university administration kept all the chairmen and senior professors busy in holding a meeting for two and a half hours.
BSMMU VC Prof Kamrul Hasan Khan held the meeting at Milton Hall of the university around 10:00am to discuss way outs about the past three day’s tensions between the two-factions of university doctors.
The tension has been prevailing since Thursday as the VC reportedly assaulted Pro-VC [Academic] Prof ASM Zakaria Swapan over publishing of a report on nurses’ recruitment in a Bangla-language daily recently.
Many doctors joined the meeting keeping their patients and academic affairs at bay, meeting sources told The Daily Star.
Both the VC and the Pro-VC traded blames against each at the meeting. VC termed the pro-VC as “criminal and goon” while the pro-VC termed the VC “corrupt.”
Pointing out different corruption allegations against the VC, the pro-VC urged all the professors to protest from their own position any sort of corruption and irregularities for the sake of the university.
Refuting the allegations brought against him, the VC said he would handle any misconduct with iron hand.
Asked about the VC and the pro-VC’s blames against each other, Prof Sharfuddin Ahmed, pro-VC (Administration), who was at the meeting, said it is untoward. “We don’t want continuation of it. We want immediate end to it.”
On Saturday the supporters of the VC and the Pro-VC were locked in scuffle disrupting badly healthcare services.
In this backdrop, top officials of the country’s lone university will sit with Health Minister Mohammad Nasim tomorrow [Tuesday] to put an end to the prevailing tension which has been affecting health care of the university.
