HC wants report from RU on steps taken
The High Court yesterday directed the Rajshahi University authorities to inform it regarding the steps they took against those responsible for making the controversial multiple choice question (MCQ) in the entry test of its fine arts faculty.
The HC ordered the authorities to submit a report on the actions in 30 days.
Following a writ petition, the court also issued a rule asking the respondents to explain in four weeks as to why appropriate legal actions should not taken against the persons involved in making the MCQ.
The university, its vice chancellor, the faculty dean and other officials concerned and the education secretary were made respondents to the rule.
The bench of Justice Quazi Reza-Ul Hoque and Justice Mohammad Ullah passed the order and rule.
SC lawyer and former RU student Rafique Ahmed Siraji filed the writ petition, challenging the legality of including two controversial questions in the admission test held on October 25, petitioner's lawyer Subrata Chowdhury told The Daily Star.
One of the questions -- “What is the name of the greatest book in the world?” -- had four choices: A) The Holy Quran, B) The Holy Bible, C) The Holy Injil and D) Gita.
The other question was, “When did the Myanmar army and the Buddhists launch an armed attack on the Rohingya Muslims?”
Deputy Attorney General Tapas Kumar Biswas stood for the state.
Meanwhile, National Coordinating Council of Religious and Ethnic Minority Organisation at a press conference at Dhaka Reporters Unity yesterday demanded punishment for those responsible for making the questions.
