HC asks Comilla city mayor to surrender before lower court

The High Court yesterday directed the Comilla City Corporation (CCC) Mayor Monirul Haque Sakku to surrender before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court in Dhaka in connection with a graft case.

The HC also ordered the CMM court to grant bail to Sakku after his surrender in connection with the case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

The bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Shahidul Karim issued a rule asking the Comilla city mayor and the government to explain why the lower court order exempting Sakku of the corruption case should not be scrapped.

The bench issued the order and rule following a criminal revision petition filed by the ACC challenging the legality of the lower court order. A Dhaka court on November 21 exempted Sakku from the corruption case, he said.

On Jan 7, 2008, the ACC filed the case against the CCC mayor and his wife with Ramna Police Station on charge of their involvement in amassing Tk 4.57 crore through illegal means and concealing information about wealth worth over Tk 1.12 crore from the commission.
