Govt plans big
The government has taken up various plans centring on Suhrawardy Udyan and Shishu Park to keep alive the memories of the Liberation War.
The fresh initiatives will be implemented under a project approved by the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (Ecnec) yesterday.
The 3rd phase of the construction of Independence Monument at Suhrawardy Udyan will be implemented at a cost of Tk 265 crore. It is scheduled to be completed in June 2019.
Under the project, sculptures will also be built featuring Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman delivering the historic March 7 speech at the Udyan. Moreover, statues will be built at the sites where Pakistani occupation army surrendered and where former Indian prime minister Indira Gandhi delivered speech. Besides, Swadhinata Tower Plaza will be renovated.
In the Shishu Park, murals will be set up on the walls. A total of 13 different rides, an underground car park for 500 cars, and a water body will be built. Under the project, an underpass connecting Suhrawardy Udyan and Ramna Park will also be built.
The first phase of the project was initiated in 1998, but was stopped in 2005 before it was finished. The second phase began once the present government came to power in 2009. It was completed in 2012. The third phase of the work is being undertaken after the Unesco recognised the historic March 7 speech of Bangabandhu as a world documentary heritage.
Yesterday, Ecnec gave a nod to a total of 13 projects including this one at a cost of Tk 12,415 crore.
