Govt concerned over capital's gridlock
Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader yesterday told parliament that the government is concerned due to the capital's traffic congestion.
In reply to lawmakers' queries, Quader said the government has taken various measures including upgrading different roads into four lanes to reduce tailback.
In a written statement, the minister said construction work is going on to create a new route of entry and exit to and from the capital.
The 20km road will be stretched from Hatirjheel to Demra connecting Rampura, Bonsree, Sekher Jaiga and Amulia. Gabtoli-Nabinagar highway will be upgraded into access controlled highway under a public-private partnership project.
On the progress of construction of Padma bridge, Quader said 37 percent works of the mega project have been completed as of October. Of the 37 percent works, Quader said 31 percent construction work of the main bridge has been completed.
Besides, 26 percent work of river training, 82 percent work of Jajira connecting road, work of Magura connecting road and service area-2 have been completed.
The minister also informed the House a total of Tk 11,616 crore has been spent as of October till start of the project.
While replying to another query, he said, there are 6.02 lakh unfit vehicles plying on roads across the country.
Earlier at the beginning of yesterday's business, the House unanimously adopted obituary reference on a former minister, state minister, three lawmakers and other distinguished personalities who died since prorogation of the 12th session.
The House also expressed deep shock at the demise of former Cuban president and revolutionary leader Fidel Castro, king of Thailand Bhumibol Adulyadej and Brazilian footballers. The House adopted the references separately with Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury in the chair.
