Govt to build more houses for slum people
The government plans to build houses for the urban poor living in slums to raise their standard of accommodation, official sources told the news agency.
Under a pilot project, five municipalities of the country will be selected to build houses for such 1,500 families. The World Bank has pledged to provide US$ 80 million for implementation of the five-year project. Now the designing and feasibility study of the project is going on.
A senior official of the National Housing Authority told the news agency that more projects for this section of people are in the pipeline to provide them with better living conditions.
The National Housing Authority had earlier undertaken a project to provide 5,472 flats in Bhashantek for the same segment of the population.
The estimated cost of the NHA project is Tk 366.34 crore.
People living in urban slums, and other low income earners will have the chance to purchase the flats, paying in instalments spread out over 20 years.
The housing authorities also undertook Also underway is the construction of 1,536 flats, spread across 32 six-storied buildings, in Boyra Housing Estate of Khulna for the lower income group.
In the masterplan of Khulna Development Authority there are 540 acres of land allotted for residential areas. A project titled Mayur Residential Area is going on which occupies 90 acres of land. It will contain more or less 700 plots, of which 379 plots will be allotted for the low-income earners.
