Govt, 4 Japan firms sign deal to build 3 bridges, flyover
The Road Transport and Highways Division and four Japanese construction companies signed a deal yesterday to construct, at a cost of Tk 8,800 crore, three bridges, and a flyover on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway.
M Firoz Iqbal, chief engineer of the division, and Genta Tabe, chief representative of Obayshi Corporation Japan; Shimizu Corporation Japan, JFE Engineer Corporation Japan and IHI Infra Systems Company Ltd Japan signed the deal at a hotel in the capital.
The Japanese government will provide Tk 6,500 crore of the total cost as per a deal signed on March 10, 2013. Three new bridges -- the second Kanchpur, second Meghna and second Gumti -- and a flyover will be built, and the three existing bridges will be renovated under the agreement. Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader said the new bridges would be completed by 2018.
