Free fishermen from jail

Sramik Nirapotta Forum, a platform of labour rights organisations, yesterday demanded that the authorities concerned free the fishermen who were jailed for violating the 22-day ban on catching Hilsa that started on October 1.

Family members of the fishermen are passing miserable days as their main breadwinners are behind bars, the forum said in a press release.

Besides, the government did not provide adequate support to the fishermen during the ban for which they were compelled to catch Hilsa, it said.

Punishing the poor fishermen without making proper arrangements for their compensation during the ban is unacceptable, it added.
